The place names buried by the volcano in La Palma and those that will be born.

María Teresa Cáceres, Professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and member of the IATEXT together with Marcos Salas, Doctor in Biology from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and member of the IUNAT have recently published in The Conversation: “The place names buried by the volcano on La Palma and those that will be born”.

The La Palma volcano has caused the disappearance of numerous spaces and with it, the place names that made reference to those areas. In this article they count a total of 131 place names that have disappeared due to to which they encompass areas affected by the passage of the volcano. An example of this is exposed with the disappearance of Todoque, but its place name will be preserved thanks to the name of Montaña de Todoque that after the volcano has been surrounded by rivers of lava. In contrast to this, they also declare that new place names have arisen and will continue to emerge with the creation of new places, as is the case with the name of the volcano finally called "Cumbre Vieja" referring to the mountain range where it sits.
