Philology and Enlightenment in Spain. The discourse on decadence in eighteenth-century Spanish letters

The Doctor and member of the Text Editing and Textual Analysis Division of IATEXT, Miguel Ángel Perdomo Batista, has recently published a book called "Philology and Illustration in Spain. The discourse on decadence in eighteenth-century Spanish letters".

This work studies the relationships between eighteenth-century Spanish philology and Enlightenment thought in order to establish what the Enlightenment philology's action program was, that is, its meaning. What we maintain is that starting from an examination of the discourse on the decline of Spain, it is possible to reconstruct the evolution of philological knowledge in the 18th century. In the production of the discourse on decadence, other ideas and circumstances aroused that also contributed to define the philology of the time: the concepts of honor and utility, international cultural competition, foreign criticism of Spanish culture and history, the apologies for what is Spanish and the existence of a political regime and a bureaucratic elite in need of legitimacy.
