In this case, Daniel Castillo Hidalgo, professor of History and Economic Institutions of the Department of Historical Sciences, researcher belonging to the Division Documentation, Heritage and Atlantic History of IATEXT, is the co-editor of the book Fuelling the World Economy. Seaports, Coal, and Oil Markets, posted by Palgrave Macmillan in the Palgrave Studies in Maritime Economics.
This editorial project, started in 2019, brings together international experts from different areas of knowledge, including a posthumous chapter prepared by Professor Miguel Suárez Bosa, a pioneer in this type of study in the Canary Islands.
The book explores the long-term evolution of coal-related markets and businesses in ports from the mid-19th century to the immediate post-World War II period. This volume adds fresh insights to a relatively under-explored subject of economic and maritime history, exploring the essential role of coal in integrating the world economy. The chapters analyze aspects ranging from the organizational structure of coal companies to technological and institutional changes within the sector during the interwar period. Among his main contributions, the book introduces regions located in the Global South.
